Nurse reports that Janet had a good night. Dr. Ha saw her this morning and is happy with her ICP levels. He wants a CT scan to make sure her ventricles are not getting too big. That will happen sometime today. I wish Janet could see the weather outside as I know that would be huge motivation to get out of here!

Praying for you today Larry for patience and strength to be who you need to be today! You’re doing a GREAT job! Cheering you and the team on from a far!

Big day for Janet. The CT scan did show some enlargement of the ventricles but not too much so her drain was removed this evening. She will be watched closely now for signs of increased ICP and if she tolerates well there will be no need for the Diversion. If there are any immediate concerns a temporary drain will be installed in her back. Dr. Redekop will determine the need for a Diversion on Monday. If not needed, I think we head back to Kelowna soon. If it is needed then we will be here the balance of next week for sure.

Janet spent an hour and a half in the neuro chair today! A really strong result and she was quite bright while sitting there. Her right eye scanned over to me a couple of times although still not focusing, it was still encouraging. As long as things go well with her I CP she will be back in the neuro chair tomorrow.

Hit send instead of return again so here continues the update.

The on site team had a chat with Dr. Sharma, a member of the neuro team that has been with Janet since day one at VGH. She recapped everything to date and surprised us in saying Janet has suffered two small strokes during this ordeal. She thinks one occurred during an exploratory procedure in Kelowna and the other during the angioplasty at VGH. The risk of stroke was explained early on and before each procedure. It was mentioned in conversation earlier that a couple of strokes may have occurred but this is the first time we’ve been told for sure. She does seem confident that Janet will wake up and improve although not to where she was before. She mentioned the possibility of being weak in the arms and legs and having some vision problems. It is too early to say for sure as she is not conscious enough to be examined. The next two weeks should provide a clearer indication of his things will go but it could also take another two months to get a clearer picture. I am focusing on the next two weeks and praying Janet does not need the Diversion and can return to sunny Kelowna soon.

The on site team thanks my mom for her visit today. This was her third trip over from Nanaimo and we are glad she is able to support us so faithfully. I would also like to thank Courtney who is doing her second stint at living at our house, keeping it clean, maintaining the pool and looking after Nash. We appreciate you Courtney and the rest of the off site team very much!

Keep praying! God is at work.

Hi Larry…. Monkey here.

Will be coming to Vancouver tomorrow through Thursday AM and have carved out time to come by for a visit and support – no idea what I can do but I will try to stay out of the way.

Baby Har must have gotten wind of me coming and is splitting the scene… the normal effect that I have on women.

VGM is on 12th and I can get off the sky train at Broadway / City Hall correct? I will ask at reception for her room.

Look forward to seeing you and Janet tomorrow. Anything that you need me to bring?

Love to all.

I’m going to call this a pretty good day for Janet. Dr. Haw saw her this morning and was happy with her response to having the drain removed. He asked the nurses to keep monitoring her as is until morning when the neuro team will assess her again. Janet spent almost two hours in the neuro chair today and seemed pretty comfy in it. Her internal clock seems a little backwards as she was sleepy all morning but started opening her right eye in the afternoon and when Laurel and I left tonight she had both eyes open. This was the brightest we have seen her. No response to commands but encouraging signs none the less.

Thanks for the visit and lunch Marina, Richard and Katie. Way to represent Port Alberni and the cousins! Thanks for the phone call Carrie! Awesome to hear your voice and feel your presence all the way from Kelowna.

Looking forward to more baby steps tomorrow.

Quiet night for Janet. Neuro looked at her this morning and says carry on. It’s difficult to say right now if she is more sleepy than before and needs a drain or not so no change in treatment for today. Possibility of giving her a lumbar drain to see if that makes her “brighter”. If so, that would indicate a need for the Diversion. Praying for a day of improvement for Janet and that she continues to receive a high level of care.

June 3

Sleepy day for Janet. Some eye openings, probably more than yesterday but for much shorter periods of time. Her nurse and Physio put her in a wheelchair for two and a half hours this morning. Janet seemed more comfy than in the neuro chair as she is able to sit up straighter. She slept through most of it but I’m sure it was good for her.

Thanks for the visit today Mike. Laurel and I needed the break and I know Janet was happy to hear her liitle brother’s voice. Thanks Joel and Kiko for dinner and a relaxing visit in the rare Vancouver sun. Love having you guys around.

Praying for wise decisions from the doctors tomorrow.

Steady night for Janet. Only bright moments were when nurse was moving her or cleaning her. She is getting an x ray now to make sure there is no pneumonia. Dr. Haw has ordered a CT scan for today to check if her ventricles have enlarged. The results of that will determine the need for a Diversion and also give us an idea of when we can get back to Kelowna. Dr. Redekop saw her this morning and is in the O R now. We hope to see him later this morning.
Praying for a “bright” day.

Busy day here in the NICU. Janet’s x ray was clear except for some impacted stool. She will be given some Go Lightly during the night shift to try and relieve that. She sat in her wheelchair for 3 hours today and seemed fine with it. Her coughs are much stronger today and a couple times she even reached for her trach when coughing. That’s a good sign. Physio gave Janet a good workout today. Lots of stretching. Her right arm is stiffer than on Friday so someone will come by more often now to work her out. She seemed to enjoy the workout even moving her left leg a little. She went for her CT scan and Dr. Redekop reviewed it with us when he stopped by an hour ago. Her ventricles don’t seem to be any larger than on Friday but they are still larger than normal. Dr. Redekop recommends a permanent shunt be installed (Diversion) and he will do that tomorrow afternoon. It is not a complicated procedure and Janet should recover from it by Wednesday. Dr. Redekop is supportive of Janet returning to Kelowna ” in a few days”. We are hoping Thursday or Friday. Respiratory Therapy reduced the size of her trach today and planned on plugging it tomorrow. That will be delayed now that she is having the Diversion.

The on site team was temporarily larger today with Cam stopping by in between BoatSmart gigs. It was good to see you Cam! Joel and Kiko were here as well with a care package and some cool Team Save Janet t shirts that the staff here and Dr. Redekop really like. Thanks you two. You are awesome!

Janet was back in her room resting comfortably by 8 last night. All reports indicate the procedure went well.

Thanks for the visit yesterday Nancy and your continued generosity. Thanks Carrie and Roger for your thoughtful and inspiring gift to Janet.

Neuro visited this morning and reports no change in Janet’s condition. She does have a bit of a fever which is being treated and bloodwork has been done to determine the cause. It seems like Janet is always slow coming out of surgeries and today is no different. She has the same nurse as yesterday so we will be watching closely but at least she knows Janet better having cared for her yesterday.

Please pray for recovery, healing and a ticket to KGH.

Just had a chat with Dr. Sharma. She told us that Janet was on the list to return to Kelowna. Then she reviewed Janet’s CT scan from this morning and noticed that there was a bleed to the area of stroke on the right side of her brain. This is common when blood is re introduced to a stroke area and often heals itself. Janet is not showing any signs of continued bleeding right now and Dr. Sharma does not seem too worried about this and will do another scan on Janet in the morning. Of course this means she is off the list to return to Kelowna until this situation is resolved. Likely timeline is two to three days. Dr. Sharna also said Janet’s left ventricle had shrunk to a normal size but the right one is the same size as before the Diversion. This is likely due to the bleed and should correct itself once the blood from the bleed is reabsorbed.

The roller coaster continues but we seem to still be moving in a positive direction.

Good things come to those that wait. Laurel and I have done a lot of waiting today and just got an update from Dr. Sharma. The CT scan shows an improvement in the area of the recent bleed and a reduction in the size of the right ventricle. The team will continue to monitor Janet and if she holds steady or improves by Saturday they will put her back on the transfer list to Kelowna. We asked about her drowsiness today and Dr. Sharma said its likely due to some breathing issues she had overnight. She has been breathing calmly today.

We are greatful for the visit from Janet’s long time friend Dianne today. Every bit of positive energy thrown Janet’s way is a big help.

Janet has been moved to the Stepdown ward. A room just around the corner from where she was with a nice view of downtown and the North Shore mountains. The helipad is right outside her window and I can’t wait to see one come in. Unfortunately that means someone is hurt so guess I’ll hope for a training run. No changes to her treatment except now her signs will be checked every four hours instead of every two. Janet spent an hour and a half in her wheelchair today and has been comfortable but sleepy all day. Dr. Sharma forgot to come and see us but we are confident there is nothing major to report. Thank you for the visits today, Judy ( my mom. 4th trip from Nanaimo), Annette, Jan and Jim. Janet will be very pleased by the showing of love and support from you all. The on site team appreciates you too! We grew by one today as Andrew is in town now. Glad to have him back.

Janet had a good night, even “went to the bathroom”. Neuro was just here and seem happy with her progress. Her RT just had a look and listen even plugging her trach briefly and Janet seemed fine with that. Another bright day for Janet. She sat in her wheelchair for about 3 hours today and seemed quite comfy throughout. Physio gave her a good stretch and noticed a little resistance in her right arm. She even spontaneously withdrew that arm a couple times today. First movement there in a long time. Laurel and I think her left eye is not as deviated as it once was and is definately moving in sync with the right eye. Janet is still not “seeing” but seems to be more and more aware each day.

Janet had a good first night back in Kelowna. A few spontaneous eye openings and lots of rest. She is scheduled for a CT scan this morning and a visit from the ICU Dr. and the dietician as well as moving to the Neuro Ward. Busy day.

The staff here are very friendly and approachable and the parking is WAY CHEAPER!

Praying for progress.

Larry is busy in the kitchen trying to compete with mom’s cooking, so the evening report comes from me tonight smile Mom had a generally quiet afternoon, opening both eyes a few times and holding Cam’s hand tightly as he caught her up on his last few days. Everyone agreed she looked very comfy and peaceful today. Physio was very kind and made a second stop by the room today to teach us some stretches we can do with Mom so that her muscles can get stretched out more frequently throughout the day. We are very happy to learn little things we can do to “help” Mom. They began feeding her again, and were pleased that everything seemed to be moving through her well. She also received an echocardiogram. We didn’t hear any results from the CT scan, but will look forward to hearing about that tomorrow.

Very glad to be ending our day in the Kelowna sun smile

Janet is having a bright day so far. Both eyes open since 7:45. Coughing and swallowing well enough that the RT may cork her trach this morning to see how she manages to protect her airway on her own. She is moving her left arm around quite a lot. Exploring her face and the trach.

Some of you are requesting visits. Please call or text me at 250 878 8442 to arrange an appropriate time. Someone is on site with Janet from 8-7 each day and as long as we have a heads up as to who is stopping by it should be good depending on the nurses’ schedule of course.

Janet continues her slow improvement. Pretty sleepy all afternoon. Laurel did give her a stretching workout and was told the echo cardiogram done yesterday shows Janet’s heart functioning well. We were unaware this was ever a concern. We are still waiting for Dr. Fox’s order to move Janet to the neuro ward. He was in the ICU today but did not visit Janet. There seems to be differing opinions on Janet’s respiratory care. Dr. Fox says she is still ” too deep” for him to consider removing the trach. The RT team seemed ready to go for it this morning. They tested her this afternoon and decided she was not breathing quite strong enough. Hopefully soon.

The staff at KGH continue to impress us with their approachability and caring attitude towards Janet. We are blessed.

A busy morning for Janet so far. Her nurse and RT just cleaned her up and repositioned her and did some maintenance on her trach. No changes overnight but the nurse and RT said Janet sometimes released their hands when commanded to. I’m thinking coincidental but I’ll hope it’s real.

Hoping to intercept Dr. Fox and Dr. Lefevre today re moving Janet to the ward and trying to get an idea of what the next two weeks could look like.

Praising God for this glorious day and the signs of hope.

Well’ it’s been one full month since the onset of Janet’s aneurism. She has been in a coma the entire time but is continuing to show us signs that she is coming out if it. Today she had one of her brighter moments of all. Lots of exploring her surroundings with her left arm, grabbing the side rail of the bed, scratching the back of her head and wiping slobber from her mouth. All firsts! There was more movement to her eyes and nose and rubbing her right arm as well. She was bright for about an hour this morning and a couple hours this afternoon, an improvement over yesterday. She had a stretching workout from the Physio and got some ankle booties from the Occupational Therapist.

The amount of love, caring and support Janet and I and the family have received this past month has been a true blessing. I can’t wait to share with her all the names of people that are praying, have visited and sent cards and wishes of support and even care packages. She will be blown away!

Thank you Team!. Keep praying and keep chanting.

I even got a repeated hand squeeze this morning. Three light squeezes after I squeezed hers the same way. Nurses will try and get her into a wheelchair this afternoon and more range of motion work will be done as well.

Just spoke with Dr. Goplen, neuro surgeon. He has put the order in for Janet to move to the neuro ward as soon as a bed is available. He expects her to be there one to two weeks then on to rehab. I was surprised at the reference to rehab and asked what that entailed. He says Physio therapy and speech therapy etc. I questioned that as she is still in a coma. Dr. Goplen said “she is no where near a coma, a coma is eyes closed”. So the small signs of improvement we see each day are encouraging but reinforce the fact there is a lot of work ahead. Dr. Goplen mentioned four months of rehab but did not offer any guess of how functional Janet will be then. The more she wakes up the better they will be able to assess her.

Cautious optimism.

Quite the eventful day. Janet has now been moved to the 4th floor neuro ward. Room 411a. She has had the staples removed from the Diversion installation and sat up in a chair for five hours. She had moments of brightness while in the chair and coughed up a lot of secretions through her trach. It is really good that she can do that and one big benefit of being able to sit up.

Thanks to Raju for driving out from Calgary to join Laurel on the on site team. We look forward to welcoming Janet’s mom, Mary/Gaga, arriving tomorrow from Ontatio. I’m sure Janet will be excited to hear her mom’s voice and feel her presence. Thanks also to the Trinity Team for the great service tonight and the hugs. You all have been a great support!

A beautiful day. A beautiful wife. Eyes open after a quiet night. Not sure about this ward. Does not seem anything like the neuro ward in Vancouver. Janet has one nurse with her all the time but the nurse here this morning doesn’t seem to know that much. She just came on shift though so I’ll give her a chance. The room is semi private and I don’t see any private rooms on the ward at all. Some are four patients to a room. Janet will not like that at all. Expecting a visit from Dr. Golpen this morning so hopefully I can talk to him and get a clearer picture of all this.

More baby steps forward today for Janet. Things settled in with the nurses as they get more familiar with Janet and the presence of teamsavejanet Dr. Golpen dropped by and said to carry on with the hurry up and wait that we have been doing. He said the one to two weeks on this ward are just ball park numbers and Janet won’t be moving to rehab until the trach and feeding tube are both removed. I think we are close to having the trach taken out but a long ways from losing the feeding tube. My opinion, Janet is welcome to prove me wrong. The RT did “cork” Janet’s trach this evening in an attempt to see how she manages. Judging by the strength of her coughs and swallows today I think she will manage fine. My opinion again. Janet is welcome to prove me right. Physio stretched her out again and Laurel and MaryGaga gave her another stretch later on. Janet loves to work out. Janet was eyes open a lot this afternoon and we look forward to even more tomorrow.

Praying for continued healing and thanking our Father for all He has blessed us with. Go Janet!

Forgot to give the evening update yesterday so y’all get two for one this morning.

Janet had another good Physio workout yesterday and sat in her wheelchair for an hour and a half. She also sat on the edge of her bed for a few minutes and it was noted that her ability to hold her head up has improved. She managed well without the trach needing a suction and cleaning once only. Her eyes open and eyes closed times were pretty equal and maybe favored sleep time a little more than Monday. According to the Dr. of this ward in order for Janet to be moved to rehab she not only needs her trach and feeding tube removed but also needs to follow back to back commands. Seems like we are a long ways from seeing that but Janet is welcome to prove me wrong.

Last night was uneventful save for the removal of her I V. It hadn’t been used for a while and they can give her all her meds and fluids through the feeding tube so that now is the only line plugged into her. Yea!

Today has started out quite bright. Lots of movement from her left arm, she’s turning and lifting her head quite a bit and “jumped” when someone dropped something on the floor in the hall. She definately heard that. Her nurse just did her vitals and while checking her pupils Janet really sensed the light shining in her left eye. I have not noticed that kind of sensitivity before and will take it as a good sign.

Looking forward to more baby steps.

Very bright day for Janet. Lot’s of exploring with her left hand, moving her head around and more confirmation that she can hear. Physio stretched her again and sat her on the edge of the bed which she tolerated well. She was “awake” enough to allow Laurel to give the inside of her mouth a washing. A first. Each of the onsite team feels this was Janet’s brightest day yet.

Thanks for lunch and conversation today Scott. You are a blessing and a big part of the safety net God has built for us.

Not really a big day for Janet but a good one. This morning was quiet with eyes open for maybe an hour out of my four there. Nurses were really good to her and during Laurel’s afternoon shift Janet had a workout and slept more. She slept most of Mary’s evening shift but was wide awake after moving to a private room in a quieter ward tonight. 4 B room 4119 We have set up her family pictures again and the inspirational picture from Roger and Carrie. The room is a little cool so Janet is all snuggly in her quilt from Nancy.

Laurel and I had a good chat with our Acquired Brain Injury Coordinator, Cathryn, this afternoon. She is not worried about where Janet is in the recovery process and confirmed that there is a long ways to go but Janet is showing positive signs. She confirmed we are doing well being bedside like we are now and says we will be needed more when Janet wakes up more. Standby Team. Cathryn is as expected, unable to put a timeline on Janet’s recovery but agreed with my suggestion that she would be on the ward for a month before heading to rehab. Could be sooner could be longer of course. When Janet does reach rehab visits will be in short 15 minute bursts a few times a day. Good info from Cathryn and she will be a valuable resource for us.

Praying for massive steps forward.

A very bright start to the day for Janet. Nothing to report overnight so she must be well rested cause she has been very active since I got here. Lifting and turning her head a lot. Using her left hand to feel the top and back of her head as well as her face. Nurse is giving her a bath right now and just before I left Janet grabbed and pulled her feeding tube a little. Looks like its time for the peg tube in the tummy. Brightest I’ve seen her. Keep it going God! Keep it going Janet!

Another strong day for Janet. She had a “bath” this morning then a good workout with the Physio team which included sitting on the edge of the bed doing back stretches and leg kicks. None of this on command but she tolerated it quite well. Combined, the bath and workout lasted almost an hour, Janet would usually konk right out after that but not today. She stayed quite awake for an hour after that. She then had a little nap then woke up for a visit with Sandi and Chelsea. In the afternoon she sat in her wheelchair for over an hour and was awake half the time, moving her legs a little and visiting Wayne. This evening after a nap she was quite active exploring her head and face and seemingly looking at her hand. She also gripped the feeding tube pretty hard but did not seem to be pulling. The Dr. put her on a steroid today to try and speed up the reduction of swelling in her head. The removal of the feed tube and install of the peg tube is scheduled for Monday.

Praying for continued progress.

What a day! Janet was eyes open for all but ten minutes this morning exploring with her left hand and turning and lifting her head a lot. She was very focused on the feed tube and frequently traced it from her nose to the safety pin on her gown. She also was rubbing her forefinger and thumb together a lot and “looking” at her hand. I spoke with Dr. Penner and he agreed to take her off the acetaminophen for a while as it seems to make her sweat. He said it should have the opposite effect but agreed to try anyways as I spend more time with her than he. I also got a complete list of the meds she is on as we were hearing different things from different folks. Around 11:45 I heard a whisper to play her some music, specifically I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz. I put my iPhone on the pillow beside her and almost immediately her face changed. A different look came into her eyes, her breathing got heavier and an anxious look came onto her face. I thought maybe the music was too loud and was upsetting her but forty seconds into the song Janet was crying! She was rapidly taping my hand with her fingers and audibly crying. I was too of course while reassuring her and telling her I love her. I told Dr. Penner a few minutes later and he was pleased saying he gets a good vibe from her. He figures she is “locked in”. Suggesting she is sensing a lot more than she can project back. The release of emotion this morning is pretty good proof of that.

This afternoon she was eyes open for all but an hour or so. Much the same behavior minus the crying. At the start of the evening shift we had her put in the wheelchair and she promptly fell asleep. She was put back to bed around 6:30 and was eyes open the rest of the time. Laurel gave her a stretching workout tonight as Physio did not make an appearence today.

Please keep praying and chanting. God is at work and Janet is coming back.

Healing seems to be happening and progress was made today. Janet slept through most of my shift this morning except during her Physio workout. It was a good one and I was able to have a good chat with Tom the Physio guy. Ideally he would like to see Janet getting two workouts a day seven days a week. He is only able to do one a day five days a week. Standby Team. We may need some help with this soon. Tom will start training me on some basic exercises I can do with her and Laurel is already an expert. Progress. After her workout Janet was put in her wheelchair and it was suggested I take her for a spin. We got twenty five feet out of her room and she promptly fell asleep so back we went. Maybe next time. Laurel pulled afternoon shift and had a mostly sleepy one although Janet stayed in her wheelchair a total of five and a half hours. Laurel was able to do some stretching with Janet before jumping on a plane back to Calgary for a few days. The Team misses you Laurel! Mary Gaga had Janet at her brightest today. Must have been the dance music. Lots of exploring with her left hand and a lucid moment when told Carrie had visited yesterday. As the team left for the night Janet was resting peacefully all clean and snuggly in bed.

Praying for big steps forward tomorrow.

Janet is pretty bright this morning. Or I should say pretty and bright. All that sleep yesterday and a restful night last night seems to have allowed her to come back to where she was a couple days ago. Eyes wide open, exploring with her left hand and lots of facial expressions. When she yawns there is even a little of her voice coming through. There already have been a couple random moments where there was a hint of emotion. Could be gas, could be sadness or frustration or could be nothing but random muscle movement. Either way, I’m considering it progress.

Thankful for the sunshine outside and the brightness in this room.

A pretty solid day for Janet. Her stretching abilities were improved this morning over yesterday and she got to wheel around the ward afterwards as she actually stayed awake after her workout. One of the waiting rooms has a view of the lake so I took her there but forgot to put her glasses on so I don’t think she saw much but I think she was aware of where she was as she got a little emotional. We are noticing that more often now. Looks of pain, worry, sadness. They are brief but there for sure. We also definately had an attempt to talk today. There have been noises before and Cam is sure she tried to say something to him the other night and tonight she definately tried to speak as I was telling her we were leaving to take her mom out for her birthday dinner. Janet was quite bright at the time and I found it very difficult to leave. Her pattern of awakeness vs sleep seems to have changed to shorter bursts of sleep and longer awake. Hopefully that continues. Dr. Mclelland spoke to me this morning and wants a meeting with me and all the healthcare team to try and come up with a long term plan for Janet’s care. She doesn’t seem to want Janet on that ward as she is not a medical patient any more. She wouldn’t say where she thought Janet should be and has asked Rehab to assess Janet and try to develop a prognosis. A meeting could happen Friday but more likely early next week.

Praying for more awakeness for my beautiful wife.

Our favorite parts of the morning and night are to get Janet updates from you Larry. We are praying throughout the day! Thank you for an encouraging update, it is so incredible to see the progress she has made so far and continues to make. Next stop, speech-ville and more awareness!! We love you all xoxo

Busy day ahead so I got here early to maximize my time with Janet only to find her door shut as nurses were about to clean her and put in her wheelchair. Forty five minutes later I was allowed in. Janet was eyes open but not as bright as yesterday. Thirty minutes later she was sleeping just as Physio arrived. Working out while in the chair right now. Pretty groggy but pretty.

She is a pretty lady. I am looking forward to meeting her Larry. The kids said she was a wonderful person. Her improvement is coming along. I wish I could be there to help with physio as I have done lots at the nursing home.

The grogginess continued throughout the day today. A few periods of brightness but not anything like what we had seen the last few days. As she started to open one eye this afternoon I played some music for her and instantly both eyes opened. Dr. Agnew, the GI, came by to inspect her peg tube and made an adjustment. Janet felt that and made a sound in response to that little bit of pain. A Rehab Dr. also came by to assess her. No surprise, she is not ready for rehab. The progress she has made is minimal and as we know there is a long ways to go. I am attending a meeting with the healthcare team tomorrow and expect them to start looking to move Janet to a long term care facility. She is not in need of the range of care provided on the medical ward where she is now and a long term care facility is more than capable of cleaning, feeding and turning her. My concern is the frequency and quality of the physiotherapy in such a place. Hopefully it’s ok, my suspicion is not. So once again standby Team Save Janet.

Thank you all for traveling on this journey with me so far. The roller coaster continues but it feels like we may be shifting over to another ride soon. Whatever ride that is I know Jesus is at the controls and it is comforting to know you are all on the ride with me. Go God! Go Janet! Go Team!

…Bless the Lord oh my soul, bless His holy name. Sing like never before, oh my soul, I worship Your holy name.

The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning, it’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me – let me be singing when the evening comes…

We are so honored to be walking this journey with you Janet, Larry and family. Praying for a great meeting tomorrow. xoxoxo

A brighter start to the day than yesterday. Janet is just nodding off now after being reasonably “awake” for a while. She was exploring with her left hand and flexing her right leg as well as trying to bite her finger nails. Looking forward to an informative day of progress.

Larry…good morning. Your updates are a lifeline for all of us, thank you for the detail of all the progress and hurdles. I devour each of your words in the morning and night, so that Jack and I know how to pray specifically. This morning I am praying Psalm 5:3, “Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.” That word “expectant” means everything to me, because I am not just hoping or wishing for God to heal Janet, I am actively EXPECTING God to bring healing in His sovereign plan. I am expecting great and mighty things and Jack and I will not stop praying until that day comes. You at loved.

Did someone say roller coaster? Oh ya, that was me. As much as yesterday was down, today is up. Janet’s morning nap was only ten or fifteen minutes long and she was pretty bright when Physio came in for her workout. Tom noticed a definite improvement in her ability to hold her head up and also in following with her eyes as he turned her head. He is concerned about her left hip as she grimaces each time he works with it. For now he will be cautious with it and over the next week try and determine exactly what the problem is. At the end of the workout Janet was put in her wheelchair. Still alert, I thought I’d take her for a “walk” I put her glasses on her face, she raised both eye brows and fell asleep. Fifteen minutes later her eyes popped open and she was ready to walk. Glasses back on and away we went. Just outside her door she grabbed the middle of her glasses, took them off, held them a half arms length in front of her face, then put them back on! Her nurse saw the whole thing and was amazed. She encouraged Janet and off we went. I gave her a little tour of the place and about half way through she got a little emotional. I reassured her and when she had calmed down we continued our tour. Seconds later she made a high pitched bird like noise. No idea what she tried to say but she definitely tried to say something. We sat for a while in the wait room looking at the lake and hills and blue sky and she for sure sensed she was somewhere different. Back in her room she stayed awake while we listened to music right until I left to pick up Mary Gaga at 1:10. When we returned Janet was tucked into bed and sleeping. She slept more during Mary Gaga’s shift than she was awake but she got some stretching in. Janet was eyes open and exploring when I said goodnight at 8:10.

I had a meeting with the Charge Nurse, Hospitalist and Social Worker this afternoon. They explained that Janet is not ready for rehab, obvious, and not in need of medical treatment provided on that ward, agreed. A request will be made next week to start looking for an alternative facility to care for Janet. I will meet next week with a Transition Nurse to learn more about the possible facilities. Everyone in the room agrees that Physio is key to Janet’s recovery and I aim to hold them to that. They were encouraged by today’s improvement and by her response to music and being “walked” around the ward. They encourage more of the same and I’m taking that as the signal to call Team Save Janet into action. If any of you Kelowna members are willing to stop by and read to, sing to, talk to or do some Physio with her let me know. I think it is important to keep this to familiar voices for now and to keep these visits short. Thirty minutes max once or twice a day. Physio would be the exception to the familiarity rule. This is pretty serious technical stuff and I want only competent people working with her. I’m confident training can be arranged so there is consistency and familiarity with Janet’s needs. Let’s chat if you are interested in helping out.

Grateful for today’s progress, information and caring demonstrated by the nursing staff today. Looking forward to tomorrow.

I would love to sing to Janet and visit her on a regular basis. I’ve been hearing whispers of music for over a month smile But only if you feel it’d be beneficial to Janet. Also interested in learning about physio but I have no experience.

Great day Larry. Productive and sooo encouraging. Hang in there. Sending you our love xoxo

This is great news! I am so happy to read about Janet’s progress. Count me in to go visit Janet regularly after work. I won’t sing, we have enough rain…, but I’ll definitely talk and read to her:)

Janet had a restful night and is now eyes open, glasses on and building energy for a stretching workout led by me. Going to be a gooder.

A gooder it was. Janet tolerated my attempt at giving her a stretching workout. She stayed awake for most of the morning except for a little nap after her bath and being put in the wheelchair. We took a couple laps of the ward with her glasses on and she seemed to be good with the change of environment. We scouted out a good spot to watch the fireworks tomorrow night so hopefully she is awake for that. Janet stayed in her wheelchair for about six hours today which allowed Mary Gaga to stretch her out a little different than this morning. Janet’s left leg was looser while seated in the chair. She was still quite bright when we left at eight tonight. It’s getting more and more difficult to leave her when she is so bright. Praying for a threepeat tomorrow.

Thanks to those who have stepped up for Extra Brain Stimulation Duty. Still looking for Physio help if you know anyone.

Go God. Go Janet. Go Team.
