Lots of love.

Any news????

May 18
7:22am
Larry Dieno

Janet had a quiet night. I spoke with one of the docs, he says it will be a long, bumpy road to recovery. The next 4 days or so especially. They are no longer controlling her BP. Just saw Dr. Redekop, he did a quick assessment and got response from both legs on the foot tickle test. That’s a first. She did not open her eyes though and has not since the operation. She is moving her left arm quite a bit. Another first. Janet will have another scan today and that should provide good info as to how her brain is doing. Dr. says it is still “too early” to say how things will go, she is “very sick”. So, good news and ok news. That’s likely the way it will be for the next week or so.

8:13am
Brittney Dieno

So stressful how slow time can be but with it she shall recover. Love you dad keep thinking positive.

10:11am

Assessment. Similar responses to all the tests. We learned that she is needing very little support from the ventilator. Breathing mostly on her own.

3:00pm
Ashley Dieno

Fantastic news !!

4:55pm
Larry Dieno

Spoke with Dr. Redekop. Scan shows some swelling, still too early to say how recovery will go. He does not see anything to indicate that she can’t have a good one.

No major change overnight. Janet’s BP got a little high which increases the pressure in her head. Got a little sedation to remedy that. Neuro team was in the building so they came to check on her and will be back soon for another look.

7:18am
Gavin McDougald

Thanks for the ongoing updates – we’re calling Doug to keep him informed

7:40am
Larry Dieno

Janet is off for another scan now. Concerned about accuracy of pressure readings from the drain in her head. Neuro says she “got a little worse overnight”. All part of the roller coaster she/we are on. Lot’s of good people taking care of her.

10:29am
Larry Dieno

Just spoke with Dr. Redekop. No major change from yesterday’s scan. Still concerned about swelling and pressure does not see anything out of the ordinary for what she has been through. We are in the peak time where complications can occur so they are watching her very closely. More hurry up and wait.

Social worker here. Going to apply for some medical EI for Janet. Never would have thought of that.

Hi Larry and family,
Joel and Dave are thinking of making a day trip to Van on Monday to see you guys, but want to be sure they would be more of a blessing than a burden. Is there anything you would appreciate having brought out from Kelowna and is your schedule such that having a couple more friends would be a welcome distraction? Thoughts?
We continue to pray. Lots. xoxo

Back in. Neuro was here and says to carry on with same treatment. No significant changes but they removed the dressing from the operation. No more white toque, now a clear blue hair net type thing. ICP still fluctuating but has been lower the last 4 hrs and that is good. Has been trying to cough, something we didn’t see much of yesterday Seems a little more responsive to me. That’s just me though.

ICU Dr just here. Nurse concerned about Sodium level and responsiveness of arms. Sodium is gradually being reduced as opposed to being shut off abruptly. If shut off too quick the body will “dump” all sodium it has. Don’t want that. Gradual reduction continues Concern whether or not left arm is withdrawing or extending. Dr. and nurse agreed the arm is extending but no differently than it was this morning. Stable she is. Glad she is getting so much attention. Thanks to Dave, Joel, Kiko, Dakoda and Nick for traveling from Kelowna to visit. Your support and prayers are greatly appreciated by all of us!

11:00am

Dr. Redekop stopped by and examined Janet. Her responses are similar to yesterday. He did a test that simulates being spun around 10 times and should produce a certain response in the eyes. Janet responded but weakly. He is keeping the treatment as is, sedated, a little cooler than normal temp and a med to assist with the ICP. He said more hurry up and wait.

Neuro was at Janet’s bedside when we arrived so we had to wait. Oliver saw us outside later and brought us in. He said she had a good night. The sedation has been off for about an hour and she is coping well. Oliver got her to open her eyes on command a couple times. Will continue to wean off the meds today and monitor her closely.

Another solid day for Janet. She is now off of sedation and is partially off the sodium. She continues to breath spontaneously with the minimum of assistance from the ventalator. Pressures remain low and the amount of fluid draining from her head has diminished. We have had numerous eye openings today, all either rendom or in response to stimulus not commands. Dr. Redekop and his team are “cautiously optimistic” at this point. We continue to pray for healing and are so grateful for the care is being given.

On site team is off duty after a solid day for Janet. She is now off the sodium and holding steady. I think we are all hoping for more daily progress than what we are seeing but we are encouraged by the small improvements we are seeing. Not so much eye opening today but she seems more aware of her breathing tube, trying to force it out and yawning a few times. Her head drain was adjusted more to the closed position this morning and her ICP remained low all day. Andrew is heading back to Toronto in the morning and will be back in a couple of weeks. Thanks for all your help so far Andrew and see you in Kelowna. smile The onsite team is going to sleep in tomorrow and be at the bedside for 9am. We appreciate your continued encouragement and prayers. Go God! Go team!

A quiet night for Janet. No changes. Neuro visited this morning and elevated her head drain a little more. Pressures holding fine. No change in course of treatment. Janet’s right eye opens occasionally and she frowns sometimes as well. More hurry up and wait.

A quiet day for Janet and the on site team. Janet does seem to be more aware of the breathing tube and did open and blink her eyes as well as move her left arm. I think all those are reflexive but the nurse did feel like she got an attempt to squeeze her hand on command. Baby steps. There is a strong chance Janet will be getting a tracheostomy in the next couple of days. The longer the breathing tube is in her the higher the risk of infection and damage to the vocal chords. This procedure will make it easier for her to breath and protect her airway. It is also an important step towards leaving ICU and getting back to Kelowna. I hope to discuss this with the neuro team in the morning and with the Dr. Here’s hoping.

Thanks to Joel and Kiko for driving down to visit today. We really enjoyed dinner with you! I am truly blessed to know you both and to be able to call you friends.

At the bedside. Spoke to neuro. Moving Janet back to Kelowna was not on there radar so good thing I asked. In orrder for that to happen she needs the tracheostomy and probably a diversion for CSF drainage in her head. Those issues will be discussed today with Dr. Ha and the ICU team. Janet had a good night, a little more movement from her feet and left arm. Praying for a strong day.

Another day of progress for Janet. Talked to the neuro team, the ICU team, Dr. Ha, and others today and the wheels seem to be in motion to get Janet back to Kelowna. There are two procedures to be done before that happens. First was a tracheostomy that was done successfully tonight. This will make it easier for Janet to breath and for ICU to wean her off the ventilator. That could even happen by morning. The other procedure is a Diversion of CSF. Currently her brain seems to be absorbing CSF again but the “downspout” to her spinal column likely isn’t functioning. The procedure will install a shunt into that “downspout” to redirect the CSF into her stomach where it will be absorbed back into the body. Neuro and ICU will discuss the possibility of doing this over the next couple of days. The consensus seems to be that if the Diversion is successful Kelowna can provide a high level of care the rest of the way.
The on site team was blessed with another visit from Joel and Kiko which really helped the time pass. Hurrying up and waiting is difficult so having good friends around is huge.
Keep it going team!

On site team is at Janet’s bedside. She is resting from the tracheostomy. Neuro has instructed ICU to close her head drain. If she tolerates that there will be no need for the Diversion. Praying for a day of recovery and improvement.

I echo Kiko’s thoughts and prayers! Doing the same….Larry had a cool experience last night. Was in a meeting with some guys for Men’s Ministry and Kiko’s text came in about the tracheostomy….we stopped out meeting, spent time in prayer specifically for the procedure and you all. Some of the guys did not know of your situation, and were moved that we could do this for you. Be encouraged….

The on site team is off duty. ICU was a very busy place today with Janet’s nurse John helping a lot with the patient next door as well as the one across the hall. He is a real caring team player.

Janet is off the ventilator and only receiving minimal oxygen support. So far she is managing well from the RT’s perspective. Her head drain has been off since early this morning and her ICP is holding in the desired range. It does spike from time to time but settles within seconds. These are positive signs leading to her moving to the neurological ward. There was no noticeable change neurologically today. We hope Dr. Redekop returns tomorrow and can give us an update on her condition brain wise.

Your prayers for her healing and our strength are appreciated!

Another roller coaster day for Janet and the on site team. The neuro team confirms that Janet will have some permanent damage from the bleed in her head. They cannot specify how much or what kind of damage until well after she wakes up. They re emphasized the fact that this is a long slow process. They are not surprised that Janet is in the condition she is after this amount of time. Dr. Redekop is away until Monday so we will try and talk to the Dr. covering for him, Dr. Ha, tomorrow.

Janet surprised us a couple times, once giving nurse John an official hand squeeze and also squeezing Larry’s hand repeatedly. Her right eye was open quite a bit and even the left eye partially opened a couple times. There was more movement from the right eye but she is still not focusing. There were a few deliberate moves with her left arm and both legs seem to be responding to pain well. Janet has been moved to Neuro ICU on the 5th floor with a decent view. This is a positive step as she continues to breath well on her own. Tomorrow neuro will close her drain again to see if she can maintain her ICP in hopes of not needing the Diversion. They plan on keeping Janet there for at least one week.

When nurse John came on duty this morning I thought it would be cool for Janet if he was her last ICU nurse as he was her first and it turned out that way! John took amazing care of Janet and the on site team and we will miss him as well as a lot of the other ICU nurses. We look forward to a high level of care and more progress from the NICU nurses. Our visiting hours are more restricted now. No visits between 11pm and 8am or from 6pm to 8pm.

Your prayers for healing, strength and patience continue to be needed and appreciated. Go God! Go team!

Janet was quite “alert” early this morning. Not following commands but her right eye was wide open and she was blinking regularly. The on site team met her nurse, Nicole. Seems nice and is going to get Janet into a neuro chair today. This will help speed Janet’s recovery by making it better for her lungs and legs as opposed to lying down all the time. Neuro will close her drain soon to see if her ICP can tolerate that and if so, they will remove the drain. Baby steps forward!

Janet just had her first work out in 16 days. Physio lady and her nurse sat her up on the side of the bed. She tolerated it well for about 2 minutes. The Dr has ordered the drain shut for the night, if she tolerates that it will stay off tomorrow as well. The longer she tolerates it the less the chance of needing the Diversion. Physio says they will probably try the neuro chair tomorrow. All in all, another good day of baby steps for Janet.

The on site team is grateful for the visits today from Heidi, Annette and Nancy. I could truly sense the peace you brought to the room as you prayed over Janet, Heidi. We really appreciate your care package Annette, you have known Janet for a long time and I am sure she was comforted to hear your voice. Nancy, your generosity is unparalleled, you are a true friend.

We look forward to more progress tomorrow. Keep chanting team!
